"USP Verified." "NSF Certified for Sport." "GMP Registered Facility." "Informed Sport Certified." These marks show up on supplement bottles and product pages constantly, and marketing copy treats them as a blanket promise: this product is safe, pure, and it works. That's not what any of these programs actually say. Each one verifies something specific — and useful. None of them evaluate whether the product delivers the benefit printed elsewhere on the same label. Reading the difference correctly is one of the fastest ways to separate a genuinely well-vetted product from one that's just borrowing the credibility of a seal it technically qualifies for.
Here's what each of the major third-party programs actually checks, sourced directly from the organizations that run them, and — just as important — what each one leaves for you to verify some other way.
USP Verified Mark
USP (the U.S. Pharmacopeia) is the nonprofit standards-setting organization whose drug monographs the FDA itself references. Its dietary supplement Verification Program combines finished-product lab testing with a manufacturing facility audit.
- Tests for: that the potency and amount of each labeled ingredient actually match what's on the label; that the product doesn't contain harmful levels of specified contaminants (heavy metals, pesticides, and other impurities); that the product properly dissolves or disintegrates so the ingredients can actually be absorbed; and that the manufacturing facility was audited against USP's own manufacturing-practices chapter and current FDA Good Manufacturing Practices.
- Doesn't test for: whether the product is effective for any health benefit. USP says plainly that verification is not evidence that a supplement produces a specific health outcome, and it is not an FDA approval of the product.
NSF Certified for Sport®
NSF's Certified for Sport program (technically standard NSF 306) is the certification most associated with professional and Olympic-level athletics, and it's recognized by USADA, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and the Canadian Football League.
- Tests for: more than 280 substances banned by major athletic organizations — including stimulants, steroids, diuretics, and masking agents — plus undeclared ingredients, toxic elements (lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium VI), and microbial contaminants including Salmonella, E. coli, and Staph aureus.
- Doesn't test for: whether the product improves performance, recovery, or any other outcome. The entire program is a contamination and banned-substance screen, built to reduce the risk of a failed drug test — it says nothing about efficacy.
NSF GMP-Registered Facility
This is the one most often misread, because it sounds like a product claim and isn't one. GMP registration (built on the NSF/ANSI 455-2 standard) doesn't test a specific bottle at all — it confirms that the factory that made it follows good manufacturing practices: recordkeeping, staff qualifications, sanitation, and equipment maintenance.
- Tests for: that the manufacturing facility's processes, documentation, and controls meet an audited quality-system standard.
- Doesn't test for: the actual contents of any individual product batch. A GMP-registered facility can still produce a specific product that was never independently tested for label accuracy — the registration describes the plant, not that bottle.
Informed Sport and Informed Choice
Both programs are run by the same lab (LGC) and use identical ISO 17025-accredited testing methods to screen for more than 285 substances banned in sport. The difference between them is frequency and audience, not rigor.
- Informed Sport tests every single batch before it can be sold, and is aimed at elite and Olympic athletes who face zero tolerance for a contaminated batch.
- Informed Choice tests products on a recurring monthly blind-sampling schedule instead of every batch, and is aimed at health-conscious consumers who want banned-substance assurance without competing under anti-doping rules.
- Neither program evaluates whether the product works. Both are, like NSF Certified for Sport, a contamination and banned-substance screen — not an effectiveness review.
Every certification above answers some version of "is this label honest, and is this batch clean" — ingredient identity, contaminant limits, banned-substance screening, or manufacturing process control. None of them answer "does this product do what the marketing around it claims." That second question is a separate one, and it's answered by looking at the published research behind the specific ingredient and dose — not by the seal on the front of the bottle.
It's also worth remembering that the FDA does not review or approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they reach a shelf. Manufacturers are responsible for that on their own, which is exactly the gap these voluntary, paid, third-party programs exist to partially fill — for the specific things they test.
How to actually use a seal when you're reading a label
A few practical habits, in the same order our own reviewers work through a label:
- Match the seal to the risk it addresses. A senior-wellness product with no athletic use has little reason to carry Informed Sport or NSF Certified for Sport — those programs exist for anti-doping risk. Their absence isn't a red flag here. USP Verified or a GMP-registered facility are the more relevant marks to look for in this category.
- Separate the facility from the bottle. "Made in a GMP-registered facility" is a real, meaningful quality signal about the manufacturer — but it is not the same statement as "this product was independently tested," which is what USP Verified, NSF Certified for Sport, and Informed Choice/Sport actually mean.
- Still look for the evidence behind the ingredient. A verified label just means the bottle contains what it says it contains, at a clean and accurate dose. Whether that ingredient, at that dose, is backed by real human research is a completely separate question — and it's the one that decides most of the rating we publish for any product.
- Treat "certified" and "clinically proven" as two different sentences. If a product page uses a certification badge as if it were proof the product works, that's a marketing choice, not something the certifying organization itself claims.
None of this makes third-party certification unimportant — quite the opposite. A verified label accuracy claim and a clean contaminant screen are exactly the kind of concrete, checkable facts we look for before a product earns any rating on this site. The mistake is letting a seal answer a question it was never designed to answer.
